Youth European Championships Festival moves to Panevėžys

By Paul Groves | 12 Jul, 2017

Last year Tiszaújváros hosted a hugely successful and very popular ETU Triathlon Youth European Championships Festival.

This year, the action moves North to Lithuania and to the town of Panevėžys. The Federation and the LOC have been hard at work for months now to ensure that the event meets the standard set last year in Hungary and at the moment, while some of us are suffering in the rains of Northern Germany, they are bathed in sunshine.

The briefings are taking place this evening for the athletes, coaches and managers from 28 nations. As we write, there are athletes from Croatia, Portugal, Slovenia, Finland, Denmark, Italy, Spain, Austria, Sweden, Great Britain, Ukraine, Switzerland, Belgium, Luxembourg, Czech Republic, Poland, Estonia, France, Hungary, Turkey, Romanian, Bulgaria, Israel, Russia, Latvia, Greece, Republic of South Africa and Lithuania! Wait … let’s make that 29, with Australia now on the start lists. Click here for the Athletes’ Guide.

All racing takes place in the centre of the city.

Thursday 13th will see a series of semi-finals over a slightly longer “Super-Sprint” course of 500 m swim (1 lap) / 11.4 km bike (4 laps) / 3.6 km run (3 laps).
From these results, athletes will progress to the finals, which will be held on 15th but before that they will all attend a very important lecture: “Fair play, clean sport and anti-doping”.

With the finals finished, the action is not yet over because there will be the Mixed Relays on Sunday 16th to conclude a thrilling few days of racing.

The athletes racing in Lithuania are our future; indeed they are the future of triathlon not only in Europe but also, as we see from the visiting nations, from far outside Europe. Once again, ETU is delighted that South Africa and Australia have chosen to race here. We consider this to be a further endorsement confirming our supremacy in delivering events and in encouraging the development of our great sport.
