It was a challenge to get here but now the real Challenge starts.

For many the drive down to Weymouth was not the easiest but as you drive onto the Promenade and look out across the bay you begin to understand why this location is such a “must do”.

The sand is perfect. The waters look so inviting. The roads behind the bay, well-known to anyone who has gone long down in the part of the world in the past, are not easy and provide the athlete with just the right level of challenge.

The briefings have been done and now, this evening, the town is buzzing with so many athletes who have already racked their bikes and are now trying to get to sleep before their mammoth effort is given tomorrow morning. “Fish and chips” has replaced the traditional pasta for many and with so many hotels and restaurants everyone is sorted.

By this time tomorrow the majority will have finished their race and the medals will have been decided. The Elite will be richer and the Age Group athletes will be wiser and looking forwards to getting those ETU medals.

With 176 from Team GB, it looks almost like the British Championships. Will there be any chance of medals going outside the island? Well, there are a few from the continent and beyond. From Ireland we have 7 brave souls, 2 from France and one only from Germany, Portugal, Slovakia, neighbouring Czech Republic, Denmark, Sweden, Spain and Finland.

The sea looks flat and the forecast is good.

The winds are due to be South, South-East, veering to South-east and swinging to East, South-east and back during the course of the day. For the swim the wind speed with be about 16 mph (about 26kph) and then increasing to about 22 mph (nearly 35kph) when they will be out on the bike.

Onto the run and conditions could not be better. A marathon is a long way to run and out there, along the prom, is plenty to see. Turn the clock back 100 years and the town was full of Anzac troops.

So, history lessons aside, this weekend is all about the long-distance specialists.
