2013 European Triathlon Championships Alanya Preview: Part 3

By David Peddie | 12 Jun, 2013

The Turkish city of Alanya is ready to host the 2013 European Triathlon Championships.

The President of the Turkish Federation, Hamdi  Gunes, has already spoken of his desire to host the best ever European Championships and it is with much excitement and anticipation that well over 1,200 athletes across Elite, Junior, Paratriathlon and Age Group competitions head to Turkey for these Championships.

The Junior Triathlon races are often so open and the number of different winners is testament to the talent coming through several National Federations.  The eight Junior European Cups in 2013 have produced seven different winners – only Raphael Montoya has won twice and one of those victories was by less than a second.

JUNIOR WOMEN PREVIEW

2012 European Junior Champion Georgia Taylor-Brown (GBR) will defend her title in what is only her second triathlon race in Europe since her victory in Eilat over 14 months ago.

Since that victory, Taylor-Brown became World Duathlon Champion in Nancy and runner-up in Tabor so she knows what is required to earn that podium place.

At that European Cup in Tabor, Taylor-Brown was beaten by Germany’s Sarah Wilm.

Wilm finished 3rd in Eilat in last year’s competition and finished 4th in Auckland in the World Junior Grand Final. But this is her first International race of 2013 and it remains to be seen how the extended break will affect her prospects. If she can find her form quickly she will definitely be a contender.

Leonie Periault (FRA), Zsanett Horvath (HUN) and Laura Lindemann (GER) have all won European Junior Cup races this year but undoubtedly one of the stars of 2013 has been Ivana Kuriackova.

The Slovakian made a stunning start, winning in Quarteira and Horst whilst finishing third in Vierzon. But since then she has recorded two DNF’s, crucially in Turkey in Antalya and in her last race in Brno. It seems to be a case of feast or famine for this talented young athlete and again, if she can find her form, her rivals will have a battle on their hands.

Junior Women Start List

The Junior Women’s race will start at 1300 on Friday, 14th June.

JUNIOR MEN PREVIEW

With last year’s Junior European Champion, Matthias Steinwandter (ITA), graduating to the Elite race this time around all the athletes on the start list know there will be a new champion crowned come Saturday afternoon in Alanya.

All the winners of the European Cup competitions so far in 2013 are involved in what promises to be a potent clash.

Raphael Montoya (FRA) is the master of the sprint finish with his power on the run propelling him to his two victories this year. Both wins, in Quarteira and Vierzon, have come by the smallest of margins, one second over Dorian Coninx in Vierzon and even less in the win over Jorik Van Egdom in Quarteira. The official results gave both athletes the same time.

Revenge will be high on Van Egdom’s find after that heartbreaking defeat. But he bounced back in style to win the Junior European Duathlon Championships in Horst and so has proved he has what it takes to win.

David Pap (HUN) and Kristian Blummenfelt  (NOR) have also tasted victory this year with Blummenfelt securing a bronze medal at last year’s Championships in Eilat on his way to finishing 2012 as the number one ranked Junior athlete.

The British trio of Marc Austin, Gordon Benson and Grant Sheldon, along with Ireland’s Con Doherty all have the potential to do well here and Shachar Sagiv (ISR) was a winner in Alanya at the 2012 European Junior Cup and his experience of the course could be pivotal.

Junior Men Start List

The Junior Men’s race will start at 1200 on Saturday, 15th June
