World Champion Andreev returns to Winter Triathlon lineup

By David Peddie | 26 Jan, 2012

The ETU Winter Triathlon series continues in Schwanden (SUI) this Sunday, 29th January.

The Swiss town regularly hosts Winter Triathlon races and held the Swiss National Championships here in 2008 and 2009.

But this is the first time the course has been included as part of the European Winter Cup calendar.

In the Elite field, Russian athlete and reigning European Champion Pavel Andreev makes his first ETU start of 2012.

Andreev is also the World Champion and he dominated the Winter season last year, winning two European Cups along with his European and World titles.

He will be joined on the start list by fellow Russian Evgeny Kirillov, who earned one podium finish last year in San Candido.

Italian Daniel Antonioli also makes a return to the Elite field for the first time in 2012. Antonioli finished in the top two of every European Cup last year, yet didn’t perform in the key European and World Championship events. He will be looking to maintain that consistency, starting here in Schwanden.

In the Women’s Elite field the clear favourite is Russian Tatiana Charochkina. In the last three years of Winter Triathlon races she has consistently finished in the top 6 and will be keen to continue her form.

Home athlete Andrea Huser has a good solid pedigree in National Championships, including the Inferno Triathlon, which has an ascent of 5500 metres.

Full race report and results will appear on the ETU website in due course.
