By David Peddie | 28 Nov, 2012

The European Triathlon Union are delighted to announce its race calendar for 2013.

2012 was a golden year for the sport of triathlon and 2013 promises to deliver even more drama and excitement from a diverse range of showpiece events and Championships.

The highlight of the European calendar is the 2013 European Championships in Alanya, Turkey, from 14th-16th June. There will be competitions for Elite, Junior, Age Groups and Paratriathlon across three days in a City with a proven track record of hosting Triathlon events.

The opening race of the year is the European Winter Triathlon Championships in Tartu, Estonia, on the 26th and 27th January, less than ten weeks away.

There will be further Winter European Cups in Vimperk and Oberstaufen, as well as the Winter World Championships in Cogne. It is hoped that further Winter races will be added in due course.

The first European Cup race will be hosted in Antalya, Turkey, on 27th/28th April – perfect preparation for racing in Turkey just a few months later at the European Championships.

Other key Championships dates throughout 2013 include the U23 & Youth European Championships in Holten, Netherlands, on 29th/30th June, the European Cross Triathlon Championships in Strobl am Wolfgangsee, Austria, on 7th September and the ETU Challenge Long Distance European Championships in Vichy, France, on 1st September.

The ETU, in partnership with Powerman, will also host both a Long Distance and Sprint Distance European Duathlon Championships in Horst on 20th/21st April.

Along with Sprint Distance European Cups there is real variety across the ETU Calendar.

With new venues hosting their first races; Cadiz, Palamos, Tartu and Alicante, old venues returning; Poznan, and the familiar and much loved locations; Tiszaujvaros, Geneva, Holten etc - it promises to be quite a year.

ETU President Renato Bertrandi said: “We have just left behind a fantastic season and we are all ready and committed to start the first year of the new Olympic cycle that will lead us to Rio 2016.

“It has been a great 2012 for European athletes with top places in the London Olympics ,the Grand Final in Auckland and an increased number of European NFs present in London.

“Europe has also hosted many top events, confirming the great exposure that Triathlon has had in our Continent.

“A first draft of our race Calendar for 2013 has already been published. On Duathlon we will continue the collaboration with International Powerman Association (IPA) for the Long Distance and Sprint Distance Duathlon

“On Winter Triathlon we are proud to host the World Championships in Cogne, Italy, and the European Championships in Tartu. We are also looking for European Cups to be added to Vimperk and Oberstaufen .

“On Cross Triathlon we are pleased to have an agreement with TNatura to organise the European circuit. Next season will be the start up. The European Championships will be in Austria.

“On Long distance we will continue our collaboration with Challenge after the good experience of 2012 races. The European Championships will be in Vichy and Barcelona.

“As you are all no doubt aware, the European Triathlon Union will work towards a better and brighter future for all organisers and athletes alike.”

The ETU are still in negotiations with organisations and it is hoped that further races will be added to the calendar.

These will be communicated in due course.
