British Triathlon’s Annual Award Dinner was held on Saturday night and saw the presentation of the first Gold Pin Awards, awarded to three of the sport’s leading figures to highlight their significant and long standing contribution to triathlon.

Dick Poole was the holder of the Lands End to John O’Groats cycling record when he became the first British Triathlon Association Chairman following its founding in 1983. He steered the organisation through its early years, holding the position of Secretary General of the newly formed European Triathlon Union and ensured Great Britain was involved with the international developments.

Aleck Hunter started out as the first Secretary General of the British Triathlon Association, helping to ensure the rapid growth of the sport through inspiring newcomers and challenging others to improve and expand on the foundations of the sport.

Simon Lessing MBE dominated the sport throughout the 1990s, accumulating five World Championship titles. Lessing set a high standard to which elite athletes aspire to and he was subsequently appointed as a Member of the Order of the British Empire by the Queen in 2000.

Both Lessing and Poole were awarded their Gold Pins at the Awards Dinner and will receive life membership and a certificate from their Home Nation Association. Hunter was unfortunately unable to attend the dinner and will be presented with his pin at an event next year.

Yorkshire’s Alistair Brownlee took home the prestigious British Olympic Association Athlete of the Year award as well as the Male Elite Triathlete prize following his excellent win at the World Under23 Championships in June and brave front running at the Olympic Games.

Recently married Helen Jenkins (née Tucker), deservedly won the Female Elite Triathlon of the Year award having fought back from prolonged injury to win the World Championships in Vancouver in June whilst inspiring Ironman World Champion Chrissie Wellington collected her second successive Female Long Distance Triathlete of the Year Award as she maintained her unbeaten record over the long distance discipline since turning professional at the end of 2006.

El sábado por la noche se celebro la Cena Anual de los Premios de la Federación de Triatlón Británica y se hizo entrega de las primeras Insignias de Oro, concedidas a tres de las figuras líderes del deporte, para destacar su significante y gran contribución al triatlón.

Dick Poole era el poseedor del récord de la prueba ciclista Lands End a John O’Groats cuando se convirtió en el primer Presidente de la Asociación del Triatlón Británico tras su fundación en 1983. Dirigió la organización en sus primeros años, ocupando el puesto de Secretario General de la recientemente creada Unión Europea de Triatlón asegurando que Gran Bretaña estuviese involucrada en el desarrollo internacional.                                                                    

Aleck Hunter comenzó siendo el primer secretario general de la Asociación de Triatlón británica, ayudando a asegurar el rápido crecimiento deportivo inspirando a los recién llegados a nuevos retos que ayuden a mejorar y a ampliar las bases del deporte.

Simon Lessing MBE dominó el triatlón durante los años 90, consiguiendo cinco Campeonatos del Mundo. Lessing puso el listón alto, al que aspiran los actuales atletas de la élite y posteriormente fue nombrado por la Reina Miembro de la Orden del Imperio Británico en el 2000.

Tanto Lessing como Poole fueron galardonados con la Insignia de Oro en la Gala de los Premios y recibirán el título de miembro de honor y un certificado de su Asociación Nacional Local. Desafortunadamente Hunter no pudo asistir a la cena y se le entregará la insignia en un evento del próximo año.

Alistair Brownlee de Yorkshire se llevó a casa el prestigioso premio de Atleta del Año de la Asociación Olímpica Británica así como el premio de Triatleta Elite Masculino del año, después de se su excelente victoria en los Campeonatos del Mundo Sub23 en Junio y tras su magnífico paso por los Juegos Olímpicos.

La recientemente casada Helen Jenkins (de soltera Tucker), ganó merecidamente el Premio de Triatleta Élite Femenina del Año, premio tras haber luchado con una prolongada lesión de espalda y ganar en Junio los Campeonatos del Mundo en Vancouver, mientras que la campeona del Mundo de Ironman Chrissie Wellington recogió su segundo premio consecutivo de Triatleta del Año Femenina de Larga Distancia, ya que ha mantenido su récord de imbatibilidad en la disciplina de distancia larga desde que se hiciese profesional a finales del 2006.
