2013 European Triathlon Championships Alanya Preview: Part 5

By David Peddie | 13 Jun, 2013

The Turkish city of Alanya is ready to host the 2013 European Triathlon Championships.

The President of the Turkish Federation, Hamdi  Gunes, has already spoken of his desire to host the best ever European Championships and it is with much excitement and anticipation that well over 1,200 athletes across Elite, Junior, Paratriathlon and Age Group competitions head to Turkey for these Championships.

The 5th and final part of our build up takes a quick look at those athletes which give the competition so much colour and vibrancy - the mass ranks of Age Group participants.

In less than 24 hours, the Age Groups competing in the Olympic Standard discipline will take pride of place as they get the 2013 European Championships underway. On Saturday morning, the Sprint Distance competitors will follow suit.

27 Nationalities will be represented in the Age Group competitions, from the hundreds of British athletes to the likes of Daniel Gassner, representing Liechtenstein in the 35-39 Olympic category. Host Nation Turkey have their largest ever contingent of Age Group athletes competing  -a great opportunity for the development of Triathlon in Turkey.

Eight British athletes form a group of the youngest competitors in the Female 16-19 Sprint distance category with Leon D’Erbee (BEL), Avner Arad (ISR) and Lev Dobrov (RUS) at the other end of the scale in the Male 80-84 Sprint category.

Good luck to all competitors and enjoy your weekend in the sun!
