Triathlon in Soviet Union (USSR) goes back to the middle of eighties years. First triathlon competitions was held mainly in the Baltic Republics and there was a long distance triathlon in 1984 in Perm city (Ural region). USSR Triathlon Federation was founded in 1989 (Dec, 7). First Open Soviet National Championship was held in 1990 in Zelenogorsk (St. Petersburg subarbia). The winners are Aleksandr Nikulshin and Leila Lint. In 1990 Soviet National Triathlon Team took part in the World Triathlon Championships in Orlando, USA for the first time. Russian Triathlon Federation has founded in 1992. First Russian National Championship was held in Omsk (Western Siberia). The men winner - Andrey Makushin (2d - Dmitry Gulyaev, 3d - Aleksandr Nikulshin). 12 July, 1992 Moscow host its first global international triathlon event - ITU World Cup. Karet McCarthy (Ireland) and Isabellу Muoton (France) were first on the finish line. Nowadays triathlon is successfully developing in more than 45 Russia regions. (Updated at 2020 Dec, 8)
